Trangia 25 Series

The Back Story…

Trangia 25 and 0.9-L Kettle.

In my earliest years of backpacking I began with an Optimus Svea stove and later replaced it with an Optimus 99, which I still have. Later I acquired a Coleman Peak 1 multi-fuel stove that I still have as well.

Stoves and lanterns became a collection hobby of mine. I loved finding and restoring old vintage stoves and lanterns and I had a beautiful collection until my cabin burned down. The point is that I have always had a fascination with stoves and have used nearly every conceivable type of backcountry stove there is.

Somewhere between my collection of stoves I began using a Trangia alcohol stove and absolutely loved cooking with it. Then during a momentary lapse of reason when my Trangia and gear were stolen I made a switch back to a gas stove. I figure it was simply selfish youthful desire of speed and distance when destination was more important than the journey.

By the mid to late 80's I was inspired by Ray Jardine and his book, "Beyond Backpacking". I admired not only his backpacking philosophy, but also how he and Jenny shared their adventures together. I am proud to say that I now have a "Jenny" to adventure with in Deborah. A true soulmate and adventure partner. But that is another story, this is about stoves.

During my "Beyond Backpacking" phase I returned to alcohol stoves. Making numerous variations of cat can stoves and the like. Then one day I began using Trail Designs Caldera Cone stoves because of their versatility in an insanely 8 ounce lightweight package for an entire cook system that does both alcohol and wood.

Alcohol stoves are a true "leave no trace" stove. No canisters to throw away into landfills, knowing full well that very few if any truly get recycled with our lack of infrastructure. Not a petroleum product, though it sadly takes petroleum to run the factories. What I love the most is the silence. No sound pollution to disturb wildlife. Gas stoves destroy silence when ignited.

Enter 2010 and a new life direction. In our decision to simplify and retire to a bicycle life, it became apparent that we wanted a kitchen for our travels and not just a stove. This was my return to Trangia.

Switch From Trangia 27 To 25

Trangia 25-8 UL/HA Set.

We began using a Trangia 27 (small) series for cycle touring in 2015 when we were building our retirement bicycle touring set up. It worked great but found that it was slightly too small for us. The 0.6L kettle did not fill both our cups and so we had to boil twice. The 1L sauce pans did not offer enough size to mix salads or other items for two people suffering cyclist hunger.

In January 2022 we decided to get the Trangia 25 (large) series. The size was intimidating at first but during our next few tours it proved to be a good decision for us.

Our Expectation

  • To have a cook set I truly enjoy using.

  • A complete travel kitchen beyond a simple stove.

  • Capable of cooking, grilling, and baking fresh food.

  • Multiple fuel versatility.

  • Decent flame control.

  • Durability to last many years of daily use.

  • Easy to clean.

  • Packable.

Accessories We Have Added To Our Kit

The amazing thing is that all the accessories neatly fit inside the cook set when packed.

Trangia 25 Multi-Disc

This can be used as a colander to drain water, a cutting board, and a lid. It can also be used as a base in snow and sand.

  • Material : Polyamide

  • Weight : 74 g / 2.6 oz

  • Size : ⌀ 180 mm / 7.08 in

Trangia 1.0 L Fuel Bottle With Safety Nozzle

A sturdy fuel bottle that makes filling the Trangia spirit burner in a less wasteful and clean manner. However, it is very important to remember to push down on the valve to relieve pressure before tipping the bottle. Not doing so could spray mineral spirits all over you.

Utensils And Extras

I have to mention that the MSR Pot Scrapper is something everyone should have in their kit. Its ingenious design makes cleaning dishes incredibly easy.

  • Opinel No 8 SS Folding Knife - Tour de France Edition

  • MSR Fork

  • Sea to Summit Folding Spatula

  • GSI Scraper

  • MSR Pot Scrubber

  • Ferro Rod

  • Wisk from broken battery operated stirrer.

Ritnifjell Innovations Ritnigrid

I cannot express enough how incredible this Ritnifjell Innovations Ritnigrid has been. It turns a Trangia stove into a grill that really works! We have smoked salmon, grilled shrimp, vegetables, and more. Another bonus is that I use it with our skillet to make pancakes. The plate of the grill allows for even heating of the skillet.

For those of you in the United States, I had to order through Ivalon Eräsoppi at XWander. Here is the link to the Ritnifjell Grill. I ordered on for our 25 and 27 series kits to make it worth the shipping cost.

Firebox Deep 8 inch Cowboy Plates

We originally began with two Snow Peak titanium plates and they are nice but after a few tours I thought that a deeper plate would be more useful. So I purchased two Deep Cowboy Plates from Firebox. During our last ride around Alaska that was definitely the case. The deeper cowboy plate is much more versatile. They keep a stack of pancakes warmer, can be used to bake, and are much nicer as a plate.

My only complaint is that they did not add the gold panning ridges to the bottom.

I did make a cutting board that stores at the bottom which also protects the surface when stored.
